This summer, earn a high school credit abroad in two diverse countries: The United Kingdom and Portugal. The program is designed as a one-month moving classroom where students interactively experience what they learn in school. Offered by Collingwood School in partnership with St. Michaels University School, the courses are open to any student interested in one of the following: English or Math level 10, 11, 12, or an SAT Prep course. This program is available to any high school student regardless of their home school and will provide an exciting opportunity to earn a provincial credit in Europe.
Begin your summer odyssey at spectacular St. Donatʼs Castle in the heart of Wales’ picturesque Vale of Glamorgan. One of the UKʼs most famous castles, breath-taking St. Donatʼs is now home to Atlantic College, an IB school and the founding member of the prestigious United World College organization. Once the home of William Randolph Hearst, St. Donatʼs hosted many celebrities throughout the inter-war years, including Charlie Chaplin, John F. Kennedy, and Winston Churchill. Walk along the terraces leading to the ocean, swim in the outdoor pool built by Hearst and take advantage of the world-class library and facilities.
London is one of the most exciting and diverse cities in the world – rich in history, yet strikingly modern and cosmopolitan. Imagine living and studying surrounded by famous landmarks such as Big Ben, Tower of London, St. Paulʼs Cathedral, and Buckingham Palace! Live in the heart of Londonʼs Bloomsbury district and a short walk from Russell Square and the British Museum. The Big Bus Tour will give you an overall impression of this great city from the top of a double-decker bus. Cruise down the historic Thames River to visit Greenwich and the Observatory. Enjoy walking tours of Covent Garden, Piccadilly, and Leicester Square. Students and teachers can take advantage of some of the finest museums and galleries in the world by visiting The Tate, National Gallery, and Victoria & Albert Museum, to name a few.
Considered by many travelers as one of the most beautiful cities on earth, Lisbon is Portugalʼs capital and one of the most important maritime centres in history. A celebrated mixture of gothic barrios and wide 18th century avenues lined with mosaic sidewalks, Lisbon is visually stunning. Stroll through the Alfama district and visit the 12th century Cathedral or the Castle of St. George. Visit Belem, the cityʼs most spectacular parish, where the Portuguese explorers - including Vasco da Gama - departed on great voyages of discovery. The Torre de Belem and Jeronimos Monastery were built to commemorate the successful sea voyages, and are now major cultural attractions. Spend a day in Sintra, the single most visited site in Lisbonʼs environs, and once described by Lord Byron as “glorious Eden”. Home to a network of palaces, including the spectacular complex Castle of the Moors, Sintra sits high above the shimmering ocean on the boundary of the Sintra Mountain Range, one of the largest parks in the capital area.
The Algarve region is Portugalʼs playground. Stunning beaches and sun-drenched villages have been seducing visitors for generations. Lagos, a picturesque fishing village renowned for its string of beaches, is an ideal location from which to explore the principal sites along the Algarve. Students will spend the final 11 days of the program relaxing on the beaches, body-surfing in the waves and soaking up the famous
atmosphere of the Mediterranean coast.
